Introduction
What is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMS)?
Oral
and maxillofacial surgeons are dental specialists who treat conditions,
defects, injuries, and esthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws, and
face. Their training includes a fouryear graduate degree in dentistry
and the completion of a minimum four-year hospital surgical residency
program.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons care for patients who experience such
conditions as problem wisdom teeth, facial pain, and misaligned jaws.
They treat accident victims suffering facial injuries, offer reconstructive
and dental implant surgery, and care for patients with tumors and cysts
of the jaws and functional and esthetic conditions of the maxillofacial
areas. With specialized knowledge in pain control and advanced training
in anesthesia, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon is able to provide quality
care with maximum patient comfort and safety in the office setting.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty of dentistry that includes
the diagnosis, surgical and related treatment of diseases, injuries and
defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard
and soft tissues of the head, mouth, teeth, gums, jaws and neck.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons recognize that educating patients about
the procedures they perform is a critical element in providing the highest
quality patient care. View the Patient

Meet Dr. Takashi Koyama
Dr.
Koyama has received extensive training in his specialty both home and
abroad. He obtained his DMD in 2000 from the University of Pennsylvania
School of Dental Medicine. His residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
was begun at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and completed
at Broward General Medical Center/NSU in Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 2004. During
his residency, he also gained experience in medicine, general anesthesia,
general surgery, neurosurgery, ICU care, and pediatric surgery. Prior
to his studies at University of Pennsylvania, he obtained his DDS degree
and had his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at Tokyo Medical and
Dental University, Japan. Following the completion of his residency in
2004, he served as an attending surgeon and a member of the trauma team
to take care of severe facial trauma at a Level 1 trauma center in Broward
County, FL. Dr. Koyama is proficient in full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery. He has been granted full privilege at Lawnwood Regional Medical
Center and is taking ER calls for the community for facial trauma. His
clinical expertise had been acknowledged and published in the Treasure
Coast Palm(TCPalm) newspaper on September 2nd, 2007. Click
here to view the article.
As a researcher, Dr. Koyama also holds a PhD. in Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery and Molecular Oncology. The objective of his research was to understand
the mechanism underlying oral carcinogenesis. He completed a four-year
fellowship at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles. His findings were published
in peer-reviewed journals. He is continuing his research effort with a
focus on improving the surgery outcome and shortening the recovery time
for patients.
As an educator, Dr. Koyama has been a full-time attending surgeon, an
assistant professor for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency program
at Broward General Medical Center and NSU for three years where he has
supervised the training of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents.
Dr. Koyama’s broad superb clinic skills combined with his scientific
mind will provide you with the highest quality service in this specialty.
