About Dr. Koyama

Double Board Certified Physician, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons & Facial Trauma Surgeon for the Treasure Coast

Dr. Koyama has received extensive training in his specialty both at home and abroad. He obtained his DMD in 2000 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. His residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was begun at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and completed at Broward General Medical Center/NSU in Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 2004.

During his residency, he also gained experience in medicine, general anesthesia, general surgery, neurosurgery, ICU care, pediatric surgery, and cardiology, ER. Prior to his studies at the University of Pennsylvania, he obtained his DDS degree and had his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Japan. Following the completion of his residency in 2004, he served as an attending surgeon and a member of the trauma team to take care of severe facial trauma at a Level 1 trauma center in Broward County, FL. Dr. Koyama is proficient in the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been granted full privilege at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and is taking ER calls for the community for facial trauma.

Dr. Koyama relocated to the Treasure Coast to become the facial trauma surgeon for Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and established his own private practice to serve the community better. Dr. Koyama is Board Certified with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and he has served chief of surgery for Lawnwood Regional Medical Center, Heart Institute, and Trauma Center.

Researcher

As a researcher, Dr. Koyama also holds a PhD. in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Molecular Oncology.

The objective of his research was to understand the mechanism underlying oral carcinogenesis. He completed a four-year fellowship at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. His findings were published in peer-reviewed journals. He is continuing his research effort with a focus on improving the surgery outcome and shortening the recovery time for patients.

Educator

As an educator, Dr. Koyama has been a full-time attending surgeon, an assistant professor for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency program at Broward General Medical Center and NSU for three years where he has supervised the training of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents.
